[Also in Division C3] 4,4<SP>1</SP>-Methylene bis aniline derivatives of formula in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are the same and are ethyl groups or secondary C 3 -C 6 alkyl groups and R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are the same and represent methyl or ethyl groups or secondary C 3 -C 6 alkyl groups are prepared by condensing 2-substituted or 2,6-disubstituted anilines with formaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst using a molar ratio of substituted aniline to formaldehyde greater than 2 :1. Examples are given of the preparation of (a) 4,4<SP>1</SP>-methylene bis-(2-ethylaniline); (b) 4,4<SP>1</SP>-methylene bis-(2-isopropylaniline); (c) 4,41-methylene bis- (2-sec-butylaniline); (d) 4,4<SP>1</SP>-methylene bis-[2- (2-hexyl)-aniline]; (e) 4,4<SP>1</SP>-methylene bis-(2,6- diisopropylaniline); (f) 4,41-methylene bis-(2,6- di-sec-butylaniline); (g) 4,41-methylene bis- [2,6-di-(2-hexyl)-aniline]; (h) 4,4<SP>1</SP>-methylene bis-(2-sec-butyl-6-methylaniline); (j) 4,4<SP>1</SP>-methylene bis-(2-isopropyl-6-methylaniline); (k) 4,4<SP>1</SP>- methylene bis-(2-ethyl-6-methylaniline); and (1) 4,4<SP>1</SP>-methylene bis-[2-(2-hexyl)-6-methylaniline]. |
