<p>A rotary device for use as a precision element such as an optical scanner. The device comprises a rotor (12; 62) which includes a driven element such as a polygon (14; 64) having a plurality of mirror surfaces thereon, means (18; 63) for supporting the rotor (12; 62) for rotational movement, and a drive motor for the rotor. The rotor supporting means (18; 63) includes a thrust bearing (44, 49, 42; 76, 78, 73). In order to provide a rotary device having a low profile and a minimum of parts, a planar motor (16, 30; 74, 68) is used as the drive motor, and the permanent magnet (16; 68) of the motor is incorporated in the rotor (12; 62). The thrust bearing (44, 49, 42; 76, 78, 73) includes means (42; 73) for directing an axial force against a radial surface (44; 76) of the rotor (12; 62) when the motor is actuated.</p> |
