Tongs for tensioning a shoe shaft over a last in a pulling-over machine or lasting machine have a housing, in which a tubular jaw carrier is mounted longitudinally displaceably, which at one end is connected to drive means which impart to it a linear forward and backward movement in relation to the housing and at the other end bears two interacting tong jaws which are coupled to an actuating mechanism. The drive means of the jaw carrier have a spindle drive which is arranged between a working cylinder of the actuating mechanism and support means connected to the housing and the spindle and/or spindle nut of which is coupled to an electric motor mounted on the support means.
