Method of determining the degree of contamination of a cleaning component, in particular a filter or precipitator, such as a gas filter, in which the quantities necessary for determining the degree of contamination, such as the absolute gas pressure, the differential pressure and the gas throughput, are measured. The quantities necessary for detecting the degree of contamination are measured continuously and the electrical pulses thereby triggered are fed into a computer.
