In order to improve the long-term stability of an illuminating device which has a light source (112) and an optical guide (114) having a light-guiding flexible tube (124) and a filler liquid containing diethylene glycol and/or triethylene glycol and/or tetraethylene glycol, provision is made on the light-entry side of the optical guide of an optical element, e.g. a filter (140) or a window (128) made from an appropriate material, which blocks radiation with a wavelength less than approximately 320 nanometres which can cause discoloration of the filler liquid. <IMAGE>
