PURPOSE:To simultaneously apply edge emphasis processing both at shadow part and a highlight part by converting a nonlinear video signal into a linear signal, applying the edge emphasis and applying the nonlinear processing. CONSTITUTION:An inputted nonlinear video signal subject to gamma correction is converted into a linear digital video signal by a linear conversion section 3. The signal subject to linear conversion by the linear conversion section 3 is fed to a sharpness processing section 4, where the edge part is extracted and the edge emphasis is applied and the result is fed to an adder section 5. The output of the adder section 5 is fed to a nonlinear conversion section 6, where the nonlinear processing is applied so as to apply inverse conversion having been subjected to the linear conversion section 3. The output of the nonlinear conversion section 6 is fed to a subtraction section 8, where only the edge emphasis part of the digital video signal is extracted and the result is fed to an adder section 9, where the edge emphasis part is added to the input video signal resulting that the video signal whose edge is emphasized is outputted.
