In the regeneration of used sand, a higher purity and a higher yield of sand of the quality of new sand are obtained by an additional process step, preferably a strong-field magnetic separation (13, 16) or else a sorting by density or a separation by grain form. By means of strong-field magnetic separators, even mixtures of quartz sand and chromite sand can be separated, and it is possible to regenerate again, at high yield, all sands arising in foundries, such as resin- and bentonite-bonded mixtures of chromite sand and quartz sand. <IMAGE>
