PURPOSE:To separate various compds., especially optical isomers, by preparing the separating agent with the powder of a polysaccharide derivative wherein at least 10% of the hydroxyl group is substituted for a phenylcarbamate group. CONSTITUTION:The powder of the polysaccharide carbamate derivative wherein at least 10% of the hydroxyl group is substituted for the group shown by formula I is used as the separating agent (R<1>-R<5> show a hydrogen atom, a 1-3C alkyl group, and a chlorine atom). The polysaccharide carbamate derivative can be obtained by allowing a polysaccharide to react with the corresponding isocyanate in an appropriate solvent with a Lewis base of a tertiary amine, etc., or a Lewis acid of a tin compd., etc., as a catalyst. When a compd. and its optical isomer are separated by the separating agent, chromatography such as gas chromatography and liq. chromatography is applied.
