PURPOSE:To obtain high-purity 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone suitable especially for a solvent for high polymer synthesis, by distilling crude 1,3-dimethyl-2- imidazolidinone in the presence of an alkali. CONSTITUTION:100pts.wt. crude 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone is mixed with 0.5-10pts.wt. alkali (especially preferably sodium, potassium, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, etc.) and distilled to give high-purity 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone having <=50ppm total content of components except 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone by area % of gas chromatography. When the purified compound is used as a solvent for a solution polycondensation reaction, a polymer having slight coloring and high polymerization degree is stably obtained.
