PURPOSE:To display an image with high density by heating a smectic liquid crystal enclosed in microcapsules by use of a thermal head to control the display state while applying an electric field to this liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:While a polyethylene film 21 is moved from the position at a time t0 to that at a time t1, a current is allowed to flow to a heating resistor 23 in the write part by an electrode 24 to heat liquid crystal in microcapsules 3 until this liquid crystal is switched from the smectic phase to the isotropic state. Liquid crystal in microcapsules 3 is changed to the nematic phase in the position at the time t2, and liquid crystal molecules are arranged in the vertical direction by the electric field between a roll I31 and an electric field applying electrode 26 of a thermal head 28. Since liquid crystal is moved to the position at a time t3 with the electric field applied and is switched to the smectic phase, liquid crystal molecules are arranged in the vertical direction still and the fixed, and liquid crystal is set to the light-transmissive state. Thus, display of high definition is possible.
