PURPOSE:To obtain the title pitch which gives carbon fibers having excellent strength and elongation by low-temperature firing and has excellent spinnability and orientation, by thermally polymerizing a hydroformate of coal tar pitch, mixing the product with a specified org. solvent, removing org. solvent-insolubles, converting the resulting solvent-solubles into pitch by distillation and thermally polymerizing it. CONSTITUTION:100-150pts.wt. hydrogenated condensed bicyclic or polycyclic arom. compd. (mixture) is added to 100pts.wt. coal tar pitch. The mixture is treated at 380-450 deg.C under an autogenous pressure for 10-60min. The resulting hydroformate of the coal tar pitch is thermally polymerized in an inert gas stream under an atmospheric pressure at 380-450 deg.C for 0.5-12hr to obtain the thermally polymerized pitch. The pitch is mixed with an org. solvent capable of dissolving pitch such as quinoline, pyridine, etc. in an amount of 5-10 times by weight that of the pitch. The mixture is stirred at a temp. of about b.p. of the solvent, solvent-insolubles are removed and solvent-solubles are recovered and converted into pitch by distillation at 240-380 deg.C. The pitch is thermally polymerized under the same conditions as those described above for 0.25-6hr to obtain the title pitch having a uniform composition composed of pure optically anisotropic component.
