PURPOSE:To obtain polyethylene of a high melt extension and a high die swell at a high production rate, by polymerizing ethylene with, optionally, an alpha-olefin in the presence of a specified Ziegler catalyst. CONSTITUTION:In the production of polyethylene by polymerizing ethylene with, optionally, an alpha-olefin in the presence of a Ziegler catalyst, a catalyst comprising a catalyst component (A) which is a reaction product of a metal enolate (i) with an organomagnesium compound (ii), a halogen-containing titanium compound (iii) and a silicon compound (iv) and a catalyst component (B) selected from among the organoaluminum compounds is used. It is preferable to prepare catalyst component (A) in an inert hydrocarbon solvent (e.g., hexane) or in a halohydrocarbon solvent (e.g., carbon tetrachloride).
