PURPOSE:To correct the drop of charging potential by controlling an impressed voltage outputting means in accordance with the charging potential of a recording body and keeping the charging potential at a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:The surface potential of the recording body 2 charged by a conductive brush 1 is recognized by a surface potential recognizing means 3, a voltage control means 4 is driven and the output voltage, i.e. a brush impressing voltage, of an impressing voltage output part 5 is controlled by controlling a control voltage to be applied to the part 5 so that the surface potential is set up to a prescribed value. Since the voltage to be impressed to the conductive brush 1, i.e. the brush impressing voltage, is adjusted in accordance with the surface potential of the recording body 2, the charging potential can be prevented from being dropped due to the deterioration of charging capacity of the brush 1. Even if the brush 1 is deteriorated due to the increase of recording capacity and the charging capacity is dropped, the deterioration can be compensated by changing the brush impressing voltage, so that the maintenance of the brush 1 can be reduced.
