PURPOSE:To obtain a high-performance catalyst, consisting of a specific solid catalyst component, piperidine derivative and organoaluminum compound and capable of acting with high activity in using for polymerizing olefins and producing highly stereoregular polymers having an uniform shape. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst consisting of (A) a solid catalyst component obtained by using 1pt.wt. substance prepared by reacting metallic Mg powder with an alkyl monohalide in a molar amount of >=twice in the absence of a solvent in the presence of iodine with <=2pts.wt. tetraalkoxytitanium, an aliphatic hydrocarbon which is a liquid at -30-+50 deg.C and aliphatic alcohol which is a liquid at the above-mentioned temperature to prepare a homogeneous solution. The resultant solution is dripped into TiCl4 at <=0 deg.C, adding a diester of phthalic acid at >=80 deg.C while stirring to separate the formed solid product and bringing the solid product into contact with TiCl4 in the presence of an aromatic (halogenated) hydrocarbon, and (B) a di- or tetrasubstituted piperidine derivative expressed by the formula (R<1>-R<4> are H or alkyl) and (C) an organoaluminum compound.
