PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for a means for impressing an external magnetic field to the titled medium by forming an underlying layer consisting of dielectrics, recording layer consisting of a 1st perpendicularly magnetized film having magnetic anisotropy in the direction perpendicular to the film plane, and 2nd perpendicularly magnetized film magnetized in one direction successively on a substrate 1 having grooves. CONSTITUTION:The underlying layer 2 consisting of the dielectrics, the recording layer 3 consisting of the 1st perpendicularly magnetized film having the magnetic anisotropy in the direction perpendicular to the film plane and the 2nd perpendicularly magnetized film 4 magnetized in one direction are successively formed on the substrate 1 having grooves. The 2nd perpendicularly magnetized film 4 is previously magnetized in one direction regardless of the magnetization direction of the recording layer 3; furthermore, the recording region is previously subjected to initial magnetization by heating up said region near to the Curie temp. or compensation temp. by a laser beam or the like while a magnetic field is kept impressed thereto in the direction opposite from the magnetization direction of the 2nd film 4. The bias magnetic field can then be impressed to the recording direction by the magnetization of the film 4 in the direction opposite from the direction of the initial magnetization. Inverted magnetic domains are thus formed only by heating up the medium by laser beam radiation without requiring the means for impressing the external magnetic field to the medium at the time of recording.
