In the anionic polymerization of C 4 or higher lactams in the liquid phase under substantially anhydrous conditions (a) a lactamate of Mg or a less electropositive metal and (b) an alkaline earth metal halide are separately distributed through the lactam. The lactamate may be formed in situ or added as a solution in a solvent, several of which are exemplified. Fillers or reinforcing agents may be incorporated in the polymerizing liquid; numerous materials are mentioned with particular reference to the reaction products of a filler and coupling agent described in Specification 1,089,697. In examples toluene diisocyanate or acetyl caprolactam is used as initiator, (a) is Mg or Zn caprolactamate and (b) is magnesium iodide, bromide or chloride or calcium chloride. Barium fluoride is also mentioned. |
