1,164,361. Vinyl ester/polyoxyalkylene ester copolymers. PFIZER Ltd. 19 June, 1968 [20 June, 1967], No. 28386/67. Headings C3P and C3R. An aqueous emulsion of a copolymer of a vinyl ester and a polyoxyalkylene ester of an α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid, the polyoxyalkylene ester containing at least one -CO/OR) n X group linked to an ethylenically unsaturated group, where R is a vicinal alkylene group, X is an hydroxyl group or a halogen atom and n is at least 3. Suitable α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acids are acrylic, methacrylic, crotonio, achloroacrylic, a monoalkyl or mono-2-hydroxyalkyl ester of fumaric, maleic, itaconic or 2- methylene glutaric acid, fumaric, maleic, itaconic or 2-methylene glutaric acid. The polyoxyalkylene ester may be the reaction product of propylene oxide with a 2-hydroxy alkyl ester of an α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid. In the examples polyoxypropylene esters are prepared from 2-hydroxypropyl di-ester of itaconic acid, 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate, 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl di-ester of itaconic acid, 2-hydroxypropyl mono-ester of itaconic acid and propylene oxide in the presence of boron trifluoride diethyletherate. These esters are copolymerized with vinyl acetate in the presence of gum acacia, sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate, water, potassium persulphate, hydroxyethyl cellulose, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium persulphate and sodium tetradecyl sulphate. |
