A process for preparing aluminium nitride powder having a high degree of purity, in which atomised aluminium powder whose specific surface area is comparatively small, as starting material, is first nitrided under conditions such that only the surface layer of the starting material is nitrided, whereupon nitridation is then carried out under conditions such that the interior of the starting material is completely nitrided. The initial formation of an outer nitride layer prevents melting and caking together of the starting material during subsequent nitridation, and a very pure aluminium nitride powder is obtained.
