A hydraulic brake system for motor vehicles is described with a brake pressure transmitter (1), fed from a hydraulic energy supply, with a tandem master cylinder (2) and wheel brakes (FL, FR) connected by way of brake lines (35, 36) to the tandem master cylinder (12). A valve arrangement, formed from solenoid valves (37 to 40), is connected into the brake lines (35, 36), by means of which arrangement the wheel brakes (FL, FR) can be separated from the tandem master cylinder (2) and connected to a return line (41, 44) leading to a reservoir (8) at zero pressure, in order to produce brake slip control. A hydraulically controllable check valve (42), which is held in a closed position by spring force and is hydraulically shifted into an open position at the onset of brake slip control, is connected into the return line (41, 44). The check valve (42), in normal braking without brake slip control, prevents pressure medium escaping from the pressure chambers (24, 25) of the tandem master cylinder (2) to the reservoir (8) in the event of a leak from a solenoid valve (39, 40) connected to the return line (41), and hence the possibility of a failure of the wheel brakes (FL, FR) connected to the tandem master cylinder (2). <IMAGE>
