PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of density deviation and color mismatch in a thermal transfer system or the like by setting the relation of correspondence between an area rate obtained from a picture signal and a density pattern having a print area rate corresponding thereto so as to select a density pattern. CONSTITUTION:A prescribed dot is arranged in a 4X4 matrix to obtain density patterns 1-16. The actual print area rate in case of print based on each pattern is measured actually. Then a lookup table making the actually measured area rate correspondent with the density pattern is generated. Then the area rate alphaof the picture element to be printed is decided based on the print equation from the picture signal, the lookup table is referenced and the density pattern corresponding the area rate closet the value is selected and printed.
