1-Ethyl 6-fluoro 1,4-dihydro 4-oxo 7- 1-piperazlnyl quinoline 3-carboxylic acid is made by (a) cyclising 2 carbethoxy piperazine 3-fluoro-aniline N-ethyl N-methylene malonic acid diethyl ester in a inert solvent, e.g. diphenyl ether, at b.pt. under reflux, in presence of anhydrous AlCl3; and (b) hydrolysis of the cpd. obtained by refluxing with a dil. aq. soln. of NaOH or KOH.
