PURPOSE:To improve separation precision by writing more than two picture elements of dot period information in the center of a picture element string according to a dot center detection result, deciding whether it is a dot photograph area or a linear picture area and taking the dot photograph area precedence so as to store it in a second storage means. CONSTITUTION:An output from a dot center detection circuit 12 (period information) is written in the position on an incorporated picture memory corresponding to the center of a dot center detection pattern in a period information storage circuit 13. The period information is outputted to two parts on all the patterns in case of the occurrence of errors in the period of the dot at that time. If it is viewed from above one scan line and it is the dot area, the period information has the characteristic that it has a prescribed periodicity, but does not have the prescribed periodicity if it is the linear picture area. For separating the picture in which the dot photograph and the linear picture of characters are mixed into the dot area and the linear picture area, a period detection circuit 14 detects the presence and absence of the periodicity.
