PURPOSE:To accurately separate contacted character strings also into individual character strings by detecting a cut area existing between character strings detecting contacted character strings and cutting off the cutting area. CONSTITUTION:An input image is scanned and processed so that black picture elements adjacent to each other in the character string direction are connected to form T3 a converted image. A connected area T4 is found out on the converted image and whether the connected area T4 is one character string or a contacted character string contacting plural character strings is decided T5 by using the shape information of the connected area T4. The contacted character string is scanned, a white picture element area held between character strings is detected T12 as a separator and a black picture element area held between two adjacent separators in the character string direction is detected T13 as a cutting area. The contacted character string is cut off T14 to independent character strings by converting the black picture elements in the cutting area into white picture elements.
