A metal halide discharge lamp is manufactured on a horizontal glass blowing lathe which is indexed by a turntable through angularly spaced work stations. Quartz tubing is formed into a lamp having a bulbous midportion 32, Fig. 1 with tubular necks 34, 35. A cathode 36 is inserted into neck 34 by passing it tip-last through neck 35; metal halide pellets 52 a globule of mercury 51 and the anode 37, are also inserted via neck 35. Hermetic seals are then made between the necks and the electrodes. A rotary seal attached to the headstock allows an inert dry gas to be flushed through the lamp body during the assembly steps for the purpose of drying the quartz and the electrodes and to prevent the halide pellets from being exposed to water vapor. <IMAGE> |
