The apparatus for guiding the head of an automatic welding machine on a working surface during welding and surfacing has a double-armed lever (1) with a joint (2) and a probe (4) for following the working surface (6), and contacts (9, 10 and 14, 15) which are combined into groups (8 and 13 resp.) and transmit a command to the head (11) for displacing it in the vertical and horizontal direction. Furthermore, the apparatus has a device for elastically pressing the probe (4) against the working surface (6). According to the invention, the joint (2) is constructed in the form of a pivot, one end of which is fastened to the housing (16) of the head (11), while the double-armed lever (1) is arranged at the other end. Here, the arm (3) of the lever (1) containing the probe (4) is made of two parts (18 and 19), which are arranged so as to be displaceable relative to one another, and carries the contacts (9 and 10) which transmit a command to the head (11) for displacing it in the vertical direction. The other, probe-free arm (20) of the lever (1) carries the contacts (14 and 15) which transmit a command to the head (11) for displacing it in the horizontal direction.
