PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as pharmaceuticals such as analgesic, etc., in high purity, by recrystallizing 2-(10,11-dihydro-10-oxobenzo[b, f]thiepin-2-yl)propionic acid with acetone-water. CONSTITUTION:1pt.wt. of 2-(10,11-dihydro-10-oxobenzo[b,f]thiepin-2-yl)propionic acid of formula is mixed with 3-10pts. (W/V), preferably 4-8pts. of acetone and 50-60% water based on the acetone. Preferably after seeding nuclei of the compound of formula, the mixture is vigorously agitated and added dropwise with water of an amount of 1.4-2.0 times the volume of the acetone. The water is preferably dripped little by little at the initial stage. After the completion of dripping, the agitation of the mixture is continued and the precipitated crystal is separated by filtration, washed with acetone-water mixture and dried at <=60 deg.C to obtain the objective compound.
