1314806 Ethylene oxide SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 10 Jan 1972 [11 Jan 1971] 1069/72 Heading C2C Ethylene oxide is recovered from a mixture comprising ethylene oxide, water, C 1 and C 2 hydrocarbons, oxides of carbon, and inerts by stripping the ethylene oxide-containing mixture in a stripping zone to produce an overhead rich in ethylene oxide, cooling this overhead to produce a two-phase mixture, separating this two-phase mixture into a liquid stream and a gaseous stream, contacting the gaseous stream with a cool aqueous absorbent in a scrubbing zone to produce an ethylene oxide-rich absorate and a non-condensable vent gas, combining the liquid stream and the ethylene oxide-rich absorbate and fractionating the combined stream in a purification zone to recover the ethylene oxide. The purification zone preferably comprises a fractionating zone wherein materials more volatile than ethylene oxide are separated overhead from the combined stream, a dehydration fractionation zone wherein bottoms from the fractionation zone are separated into a top product comprising ethylene oxide and a bottom aqueous stream substantially free of ethylene oxide, and an ethylene oxide product fractionation zone wherein the dehydration fractionation zone top product is separated into a high purity ethylene oxide overhead product and an acetaldehyde containing ethylene oxide bottom product. The purification zone may contain a second stripping zone wherein acetaldehyde is removed from the acetaldehyde-containing ethylene oxide fraction. The bottom aqueous stream from the dehydration fractionation zone may be cooled and used to form at least part of the aqueous absorbent. The noncondensable vent gas may be recycled to a catalytic oxidation zone for conversion of the ethylene in the vent gas to ethylene oxide. |
