PURPOSE:To suppress decomposition activity of pyruvic acid and obtain the titled compound in high yield, by using tryptophanase-containing microbial cells subjected to specific treatment in obtaining L-tryptophan from indole, pyruvic acid and ammonia. CONSTITUTION:Microbial cells of a tryptophanase-containing microorganism, e.g. Escherichia coli ATCC 27325, etc., or treated microbial cells thereof are initially heat-treated in the presence of pyridoxal phosphate and then the above- mentioned microbial cells or treated microbial cells thereof are used as an enzymic catalyst to subject indole, pyruvic acid (salt) and ammonia or ammonium ions to enzymic reaction. The afore-mentioned heat treatment is preferably carried out at pH6-8 and 50-60 deg.C temperature for 0.5-5hr.
