In order to be able to remove the instrument tip in a writing instrument and applicator, the cap has a hexagonal recess which, after removal of the cap, can be fitted onto a hexagon of the tip of the instrument. This entails the risk of contamination. The cap is to be so designed that, in the assembly operation, the cap covers the tip of the instrument without being refitted. The tip (2) of the instrument and the cap (3) each have teeth (8, 18). In the normal position of the cap (3), a latching upward projection (5) of the cap (3) engages into a latching recess (6) on the tip (2) of the instrument and the teeth (8, 18) are at a distance from each other. If the cap (3) is pushed further onto the tip (2) of the instrument, the teeth (8, 18) come into engagement with each other, so that the tip (2) of the instrument can now be unscrewed from the shaft (1). The cap is particularly suitable for writing instruments and applicators which have exchangeable ink cartridges. <IMAGE>
