PURPOSE:To obtain a steel for carburizing in which harmful integranular oxidation occurring to the surface layer of a steel stock at the time of carburizing treatment is reduced and which has fatigue resistance, by providing a composition consisting of respectively prescribed amounts of C, Si, Mn, and Cr as principal components and the balance Fe with impurities. CONSTITUTION:The steel for carburizing of this invention has a composition consisting of, by weight, 0.1-<0.3% C, <0.10% Si, 0.75-<2.00% Mn, <0.3% Cr, as principal components, and the balance Fe with impurities. In this steel for carburizing, occurrence of a surface abnormal layer is minimized even when subjected to carburizing in an ordinary gas carburizing atmosphere, and so the occurrence of the surface abnormal layer can be controlled even if carburizing treatment is not carried out in vacuum. Accordingly, the properties of parts are remarkably improved and the manufacturing costs of parts can be reduced and, moreover, productivity can also be improved.
