An electric heater regulated by a room temperature regulator and controlled by the electric power company comprises a direct heater which can be switched on and off in at least two different power stages, a storage heater, and receiving equipment 6 for processing a rotary timing signal transmitted by the electric power company, by means of which signal the unit 1 can be switched over from storage-free operation to storage operation and conversely. In order to develop a unit of this type further so that an improved room temperature regulation can be achieved for all types of operation and so that the wiring and circuitry expenditure during the installation of the unit is reduced, the room temperature regulator 13 connected electrically to the unit 1 and arranged directly in the unit is a proportional/two-point regulator controlling the ventilator operation and switching the at least two power stages of the direct heater 2, 3, which regulator in storage-free operation at low power and during storage discharge regulates the ventilator 7 in the proportional range and ensures that the ventilator 7 in the high power stage 3 in storage-free operation runs with approximately full ventilator power. <IMAGE>
