NEW MATERIAL:The optical active hydroxycyclopentenones of formula I (R is H or OH-protecting group; n is 4-8). EXAMPLE:l-3-Hydroxy-2-(7-hydroxyheptyl)-4-cyclopentenone. USE:Useful as an intermediate for prostaglandins valuable as pharmaceuticals. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by the asymmetric hydrolysis of a dl-cyclopentenone ester of formula II (R1 is acyloxy; R' is OH- protecting group) with an esterase produced by microorganisms of derived from animal or vegetable. The compound of formula II used as a starting compound is synthesized by protecting the side-chain OH group of the compound of formula III and reacting the resultant compound of formula IV with an aliphatic carboxylic acid.
