PURPOSE:To separate the titled compound from a stock oil containing a mixture of dimethylnaphthalene isomers, by using a solid adsorbent consisting of a Y-type zeolite having cation site ion-exchanged with Li and using p-xylene as a desorbing agent. CONSTITUTION:A stream of a stock oil containing 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene and at least one kind of other dimethylnaphthalene isomer and/or a hydrocarbon having a soliding point range of 220-270 deg.C and/or its derivative is made to contact with Y-type zeolite having lithium at the cation site and packed in a chromatographic column as a single bed (adsorbent). The bed is then treated with p-xylene as a desorption agent capable of selectively desorbing 2,6- dimethylnaphthalene. The objective 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene can be selectively separated in high efficiency by this process. |
