1319010 Substituted butyronitriles F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 20 Dec 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 59016/71 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of the formula where R is H or -CO-Y-COOH, Y is an aliphatic hydrocarbylene group of 2-5 carbon atoms or an arylene group, R3 is a primary alkyl group of 1-8 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl group of 3-8 carbon atoms, and addition salts with bases of those compounds in which R is -CO-Y-COOH. The compounds are prepared by reducing the appropriate 4-phenyl- 4-oxo-butyronitrile to give the alcohol which may be esterified with a suitable derivative of a dicarboxylic acid of the formula and subsequently, if desired, reacting the product with an organic base.
