<p>1345111 Coating compositions for synthetic resins ASAMI KASEI KOGYO KK 9 March 1972 [12 March 1971 1 June 1971 16 June 1971 23 July 1971] 10948/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A coating composition for synthetic resins comprises (A) 100 pbw of a hexakis (alkoxymethyl) melamine wherein the alkyl groups have 1-4C atoms, (B) 0.01-5 pbw of a nitrocellulose, (C) 1-50 pbw of a polyalkylene glycol H(OR<SP>2</SP>)pOH or derivative H[(OR<SP>2</SP>)pX]n (R<SP>2</SP>O)pH thereof, where R<SP>2</SP> is -CH 2 CH 2 -, -CH 2 CH(CH 3 )-, -(CH 2 ) 4 - and X is -OCOO-, -OOC.COO-, -OOC.R<SP>3</SP>.COO-, -OOC.NH.R<SP>4</SP>.NH.COO- or -NR<SP>5</SP>-, where R<SP>3</SP> is a C 1-14 alkylene group or phenylene or cyclohexylene, R<SP>4</SP> is a C 2-17 alkylene group or phenylene or cyclohexylene, R<SP>5</SP> is a C 1-8 alkyl group, R<SP>2</SP> being -CH 2 CH 2 - when X is -NR<SP>5</SP>-, p is an integer and n is 1-10, and (D) 0.01-12 moles of an acid catalyst per mole of (A). There may also be present (E) 0.1-20 pbw of a tetramethyl or tetraethyl silicate and/or (F) 0.5-6 pbw of an oil-soluble dye. Preferably (B) has an N content of 9-12.5 wt. % and degree of polymerization 30-1000. Suitable solvents for most surfaces comprise a mixture of an alcohol, chloroform, an alkyl acetate and water; for a methyl methacrylate polymer containing 0.5-15 mole % methyl acrylate units, a solvent containing an alcohol, a ketone and water is preferred. In the Examples (A) 30 pbw of hexamethoxymethyl melamine (the n-butyl ether in Ex. 1 and Ex. 9, the ethyl or isopropyl ethers in Ex. 10), (B) 0.3 pbw of nitrocellulose, 11.9% N and 85 degree of polymerization or 10.5% N and 150 DP, (C) 1-20 pbw of polyethylene glycol (MW 400 or 2000), polypropylene glycol (2000) or polytetramethylene glycol (2000), or polyethylene glycol modified in 2:1 or 3:2 ratio with hexamethylene diisocyanate, dicylohexylmethane diisocyanate, diethyl carbonate, isophthalic acid or adipic acid, or oxyethylenated butylamine (28:1 molar ratio), (E) optionally up to 7 pbw of tetramethyl silicate (Ex. 11) or tetraethyl silicate (Ex's 3, 4, 8, 9, 10) and (F) optionally up to 2.1 pbw of various dyes (Ex's. 12 and 13) are dissolved in ethanol/chloroform/ isobutyl acetate/amyl acetate/water (15:65:15:2: 3) or ethanol/chloroform/isobutyl acetate/amyl acetate (40:48:11:1) or ethanol/butanol/MEK/ water (49:4:46:1) or methanol/ethanol/butanol/ MEK/water (3:50:40:5:2). The solutions are mixed in 1:1 wt. ratio with (D) 0.8, 1.0 or 1.4 N H Cl or with (Ex. 14) 46 parts of methanol containing 14 pbw p-toluenesulphonic acid, 8 pbw H 3 PO 4 , 18 pbw oxalic acid or 18 pbw acetic acid. Into the product coating composition are dipped plates of polymethyl methacrylate, or of methyl acrylate-modified (6%) polymethyl methacrylate (Ex. 5) or a lens of such a material (Ex. 10) or a plate of cellulose di- or tri-acetate, ABS, polycaprolactam, nylon 6-6, a polycarbonate or an unsaturated polyester (Ex, 7).</p> |
