PURPOSE:To improve the fiber coupling efficiency by etching at least part of the substrate to form a reflective surface in the neighborhood of the active layer, thereby efficiently inputting the light propagating to the substrate side into an optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:When a forward current is made to flow through an light emitting diode, the current concentrates and flows in the central part of the device in which an insulating film 5 was removed in a striped shape, emitting a light near the center of an active layer 3. The light propagates in various directions, and of the lights travelling to the outgoing end face, a light 9 propagating within an InP crystal to the substrate 1 side is reflected and guided by a reflective surface 8 formed in the neighborhood of the active layer 3, reaching the end face of an optical fiber 10. Therefore, the coupling with the optical fiber 10 can be made efficiently. |
