The system in accordance with the invention comprises a device 1 for adjusting the axial position of a hub 11 on a steering column 10. This device 1 comprises a threaded ring 17 screwed inside a bore 15 of the hub and whose position can be adjusted along this bore, a fixed stop 9 of the column against which the ring 17 bears, and an axial blocking means 30. This device 1 may be combined with a device 2 for the angular adjustment of the hub 11, the two adjustments being independent of one another.
