NEW MATERIAL:The organic selenium compound of formula I [Ar is (substituted)aryl or (substituted)heterocyclic group; the substituent group is lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, phenoxy, halogen, lower alkylthio, lower alkanoyl, benzoyl, benzoyloxy, lower alkanoyloxy, hydroxy, etc.]. EXAMPLE:1-Hydroxy-1-(4'-methylphenyl)-2-phenylselenopropane. USE:A synthetic intermediate for an alpha-aromatic-substituted propionic acid or its ester useful as a medicine having anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions (e.g. ibuprofen) or its intermediate. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting a compound of formula II with benzeneselenyl chloride in an inert solvent and reacting the resultant compound of formula III with a reducing agent such as lithium hydride.
