The ship combination (10) for operating in ice-bound waters comprises a normal vessel (11) to propel the combination and a buoyant member (12). This has ice breaker bows (13) and has its stern end (14) couplable with the bows (15) of the vessel. The stern end (14) first has a recess to permit entry of the bows (15). The longitudinal depth of this recess may be such that it can accomodate at least the immediate bow (15) area of the vessel or, alternatively, also a forward portion of the sides of the vessel.
