A mechanism for automatic circuit breakers, especially line protection circuit breakers, whose tripping is effected either thermally and/or magnetically by specific current levels in the overcurrent range, it being necessary to ensure by free tripping that this tripping remains effective even if the manual operating device is held in the switched-on position, having a contact lever which is mounted on a stationary shaft, the mounting point of said contact lever being constructed as an elongated hole and its restoring force being produced by a spring which is effectively connected to said contact lever, and that the mounting point of the contact lever is formed as a bent elongated hole which controls the contact arm such that the contact located thereon is positively displaced in a rubbing manner on the mating contact, and subsequently carries out a rolling-off movement. <IMAGE>
