1-(beta-D-Ribofuranosyl) 1,2,4-triazole 3-carboxamide, for use as an antitumour agent, is made by (a) recting suitable molar amounts of the methyl ester of 1-(2,3,5-tri-O-R -D-ribofuranosyl) 1,2,4-triazole 3-carboxylic acid, in which R is benzoyl or acetyl, with anhydrous ammonia in methanol at 0 deg.C; (b) maintaining in a closed vessel for 72 hours at 25 deg.C; (c) evaporating in a rotary evaporator under reduced pressure at 35 deg.C; and (d) crystallising from ethanol.
