A stator housing carries peripherally-mounted magnetic coils. A brake shaft (9) can be coupled to the drive shaft and a rotor fixed to the brake shaft. The housing hub (5) is located by two brake shaft bearings (41) spaced at the largest possible axial distance. - Within the housing hub, one part of an anti-locking protection system is provided for detecting the r.p.m. of the brake shaft (9) which controls the excitation voltage of the magnetic coils (3) of the eddy current brake. The r.p.m. sensor is pref. arranged of the magnetic coils (3) of the eddy current brake. The r.p.m. sensor is pref. arranged as an inductive transmitter (51) working inconjunction with a pinion (52) fitted on the brake shaft (9).
