PURPOSE:To shorten a settling time and to reduce hysterisis by preventing the change of a movement with the aid of a magnetic field generating means, when a head carriage equipped with a magnetic head moves in the radial direction of a disk. CONSTITUTION:The head carriage 12, a magnetic head 11, and a magnet 16 move along a guide rod 13, along the radial direction of a disk, and along the radial direction in the hollow part of a solenoid 17 respectively by the rotation of a stepping motor 14, and the head 11 stops at the prescribed position of the disk by the stop of the motor 14. At that time, in the solenoid 17, a magnetic field to prevent the change of the motion of the magnet 16 is generated, and an electromotive force proportional to the change of the movement is generated. The magnet and the solenoid constitute the magnetic damper of the carriage, and reduce the discrepancy of a tracking accuracy. By this damping effect, the settling time can be shortened and the hysterisis can be decreased.
