PURPOSE:To obtain molten by stably smelting-reducing powdery ore, by deciding grain size of carbon material, diameter of furnace hearth and interval of tuyeres in upper and lower steps of a vertical type smelting reduction furnace to suitable dimensions and injecting the powdery ore, etc., from the upper step tuyere and high temp. air from the lower step tuyere. CONSTITUTION:Coke charged from hopper 2 for coke is filled up between the upper step tuyere 6 and the lower step tuyere 11 in the vertical type smelting reduction furnace 5. Next, the air supplied by a blower 7, is enriched by oxygen in case of need, and heated by a heat exchanger 9 and the generated high temp. air is blown into the furnace from the lower step tuyere 11. On the other hand, the powder ore, etc. supplied from the hopper 1 for the ore through supplying quantity adjusting feeder 3 and blowing pipe 4 is injected into the furnace from the upper step tuyere 6 by high temp. air. In the operation method of he smelting reduction furnace, the average grain size DC (m) of coke, the diameter of furnace hearth DT (m) and the interval H (m) of both tuyeres are set, so as to satisfy the equation H=k.DC.DT<0.3> (where 30<k<100). In this way, the stabilization of operation in contrived. and the above ore is smelting-reduced, and molten metal and slag are discharged from iron tapping hole 12 and slag tapping hole 13.
