PURPOSE:To make a menu item displayed by using a soft key easily legible and to improve visibility by providing the titled device with a means for expansively displaying a part of characters or all the characters of a menu. CONSTITUTION:When a operator depresses a key switch 3 corresponding to the soft key, a key operation detecting circuit 4 detects the operation. The output of the circuit 4 starts a timer circuit 5, switches a switching circuit 6 to the output side of an expanded character generating circuit 2 and displays expanded characters. When no key is depressed, the timer circuit 5 switches the circuit 6 to the side of a normal character generating circuit 1.
