PURPOSE:To form a carbonitride layer of Cr having excellent resistance to wear, seizure, corrosion, oxidation, etc., on the surface of iron and steel materials by incorporating Cr into a fused salt bath of the cyanide salt, etc., of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, then immersing the iron and steel materials into said bath and heating the same to a specific temp. CONSTITUTION:Metal Cr, iron-chromium alloy, Cr2O3, etc., are added and dissolved in the state of fine powder into the fused salt prepd. by adding 1 or >=2 kinds of the cyanide salt and cyanate of the alkali metals or alkaline earth metals or further 1 or >=2 kinds among the chloride, fluoride, borofluoride, oxide, boride, iodide, carbonate, nitrate, and borate of the alkali metals or alkaline earth metals. Such fused salt bath is heated to <=650 deg.C and the iron and steel members consisting of carbon steel, alloy steel, cast iron, sintered alloy, etc., are immersed therein. An electrolytic treatment is otherwise executed with the iron and steel members as a cathode and the Cr-contg. material as an anode to form the hard carbonitride layer of chromium having various excellent characteristics on the surface of the iron and steel members.
