PURPOSE:To detect the height of the top surface of contents regardless of whether a container is transparent or colored thickly by detecting the height position of the top surface of the contents from a value of electrostatic capacity. CONSTITUTION:When the container 2 which contains the contents 3 is conveyed to the detection area of a lower-limit sensor 15, a position detection sensor 22 detects the position of the container 2 to time the detection of the lower-limit sensor 15, which detects the height position of the top surface 3a of the contents. At this time, when the height position of the top surface 3a of the contents is lower limit, the detected electrostatic capacity value is an intermediate value, so as abnormality signal is outputted. An upper-limit sensor 19, on the other hand, detects the electrostatic capacity as mentioned above when the container 2 is conveyed to the detection area of the sensor 19. In this case, when the top surface 3a exceeds the upper limit, the abnormality signal is outputted.
