PURPOSE:To efficiently smelt a chromium-contg. steel at a low cost by charging adequate amts. of chromium oxide, iron oxide and exothermic material into a reaction vessel, effective a thermit reaction and adding the molten ferrochromium formed in such a manner to a molten steel. CONSTITUTION:A thermit reaction material 3 consisting of the chromium oxide, iron oxide and the exothermic material such as Al is charged into a reaction vessel 1 lined with refractories 8. The equation H/S<0.51, Cr/Cr+Fe=0.3-0.8 [where H; the inside charging height (m) of the above-mentioned raw material 3 in the reaction vessel 1, S; the bottom area (m<2>) of the vessel 1, Cr; the weight (kg) of Cr in the material 3, Fe; the weight (kg) of Fe in the material 3] is satisfied at this time. Mg4 imposed on the material 3 is then ignited to effect the thermit reaction. The molten ferrochromium formed in such a manner is added through a sliding nozzle 2 in the bottom of the vessel 1 into the molten steel 7 in a ladle 6. The chromium-contg. steel is thereby smelted quickly without lowering the temp. thereof.
