PURPOSE:To read a word including an isolated character or a contacting one by comparing a candidate word obtained through retrieval with a character string, specifying a mistakenly segmented part and again executing character segment, character recognition and word retrieval. CONSTITUTION:A character string generation means 4 combines candidate characters to attain a character string, and a word retrieval means 5 retrieves the string in a word dictionary 6. At that time, the word retrieval means 5 collates the character string with a word in the dictionary 6, while including the non-coincidence of some character and misalignment of character, and selects the candidate word. A word comparison means 9 compares the character string with the candidate word. When a complete coincidence is found, the word is determined to be a final candidate word. If the coincidence is not found, the means 9 instructs a character segment means 2 to again segment an input character pattern 1 corresponding to the part which is non-coincident between candidate word and character string.
