The subject of the invention is an apparatus for the intermediate storage and/or buffering of trestles 1, for example filled with cigarettes, having a shelf 2 with a plurality of horizontal tiers E1 to E4 located one above the other. In order to provide an apparatus which, whilst having a low surface requirement, automatically receives trestles and delivers them again by utilising the room height, irrespective of the place of installation of the trestle-filling or trestle-emptying machines, whilst a computer-controlled flow is to be possible, it is proposed by means of the invention that the horizontal tiers E1 to E4 located one above the other each have a longitudinally extending horizontal conveyor 3 for the trestles 1, that a vertical conveyor 6 for the vertical transport of the trestles 1 to the individual tiers E1 to E4 be arranged on the horizontal conveyors on their end faces, that a feed and discharge device 11 for the trestles 1 to be intermediately stored and/or to be buffered be provided for the apparatus, and in that transfer devices 13 for transferring the trestles 1 onto the horizontal conveyors 3 be provided. <IMAGE>
